Newcastle MP Jodi McKay declined but plenty of others jumped at the chance to take part in a ‘‘grape stomp’’ at Lambton Park yesterday.
Up to two tonnes of Hunter Valley grapes, provided by Ian Burgess of Moorebank Wines, were delivered to the park for the official media launch of the Lambton Park Wine and Food Festival to be held on March 5 and 6.

Festival spokeswoman Melinda Murray said politicians, media personalities and representatives of the hospitality industry attended the launch, including Ms McKay.

Guests were treated to the gourmet dishes of Mark Hosie of Rustica Newcastle Beach restaurant.

‘‘A number of guests were pulled out of the crowd and had great fun stomping the grapes in two large barrels,’’ Ms Murray said.

Over 50 exhibitors, offering food and market stalls and a huge selection of Hunter Valley wines, have agreed to take part in the festival.
